Microsoft Office Applications Professional - (Effective Spring 2026) Technical Certificate of Credit

The Microsoft Office Applications Professional Technical Certificate of Credit program provides students with the knowledge and skills to perform word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications in an office environment. It is designed to provide hands-on instruction for developing foundation skills for office assistant careers as well as to prepare students for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. Graduates of the program receive a Microsoft Office Applications Professional Technical Certificate of Credit. The standard curriculum for the Microsoft Office Applications Professional Certificate program is designed for the semester system. Students may enter the program any semester. The certificate generally takes two (2) semesters to complete. To graduate, students must earn a minimum of 16 credit hours.

Requirements

  • Be at least 16 years of age;
  • Submit official high school/high school equivalent transcripts;
  • Submit official college transcripts, if applicable;
  • Satisfy Placement Testing requirements.

Curriculum Outline (16 hours)
BUSN 1450

(Prerequisite: COMP 1000) This course covers the basic skills required to use word processing, spreadsheet and database management software through course demonstrations, laboratory exercises, and projects.

BUSN 2130

(Prerequisites: BUSN 1450) This course expands on basic spreadsheet software knowledge and skills. Topics will include: advanced workbook options and setting, applying custom formats and layouts, creating and applying advanced formulas, and creating advanced charts and tables. This course is designed to prepare the student to take the related Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam.

BUSN 2140

(Prerequisite: BUSN 1450) This course expands on basic word processing knowledge and skills. Topics will include managing document options and settings, creating advanced documents and using advanced tools to create document elements and references. This course is designed to prepare the student to take the related Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam.

This course introduces the fundamental concepts, terminology, and operations necessary to use computers. Emphasis is placed on basic functions and familiarity with computer use. Topics include introductions to computer and digital terminology and usage, operating systems, Internet and digital communication, word processing applications, spreadsheet applications, database applications, and presentation applications.
